History
Espac was founded in 1990 in Düsseldorf, Germany and has been the packaging consulting company of the Esswell group that was later acquired by Assi Domän and Kappa before the merger with Smurfit took place.
Espac is responsible for promoting the licenses to manufacture different tray designs known under the brand name P84. These tray designs were developed in Alicante, Spain in the early 1980’s. to replace the previous widespread use of wooden crates for the packaging of fruit & vegetables. The very first use of P84 trays was for the transportation of tomatos from the Canary Islands. As well as the development of tray designs and machines to erect the trays, the know-how to produce the right grade of corrugated board was also refined.
The success in the Spanish market led to the decision to offer this know-how to other corrugated manufacturers throughout the world. This was the start of ESPAC and the first licensee agreement was signed in 1999.
The license is based on the three elements:
- Tray designs
- Erecting machines
- Know How
